A practical tutorial for YForge’s free 3D room planner. Arrange framing, explore wood and wallpaper, place LED points and turn your own image into a sized wood-cutout concept.

Alignment illustration. Green placement hints use object footprints; they are not a structural or clearance certification.01 / MAKE SPACE TO DESIGN
Set your room. Then walk through it.
Open Room Studio and enter the room width, depth and height in inches. Twelve inches equals one foot. Start with measured dimensions when you have them; identify estimates before showing a concept to a client.
Use Builder → Room dimensions to adjust the room. The compact palette leaves more of the canvas visible.
In 3D, toggle Walk. Drag the left thumbstick to move; drag the right side to look. Use the right +/− controls to step closer or back.
Exit Walk to edit. Select a piece and choose Focus to bring it into view. Use the main +/− controls or pinch zoom to inspect details.
Walk changes the camera, not your design. It stays within the room envelope, but does not simulate collision with furniture or test walking clearances.
02 / BUILD A REPEATABLE LAYOUT
Place 2×4s and align a framed wall.
Choose Builder → 2×4 piece or Framed wall, then tap the floor. The drawer closes for placement. Select Move here to reposition a piece with another tap, or drag it using the colored handles.
PLACE
Read the green cells
While dragging in 3D, green squares mark nearby center positions where the item’s bounding footprint fits without overlapping objects at the same surface depth. A rotated footprint is conservative; green does not check loads, wiring or code.
ALIGN
Follow the guide lines
Similarly oriented pieces produce edge and center alignment lines. Use the selected object’s More menu to switch guides on or off and choose a 1, 6, 12, 16 or 24-inch grid. Nearby guides attract the piece into alignment. On desktop, hold Alt to bypass snapping temporarily.
RESIZE
Change length and height
Select a framed wall and open Edit. Enter wall length and height, or reduce either by 12 inches. Its 3½-inch framing core stays fixed. An existing opening keeps its size, so the wall cannot shrink through it.
For individual 2×4 pieces, the 1½ × 3½-inch cross-section is fixed and the modeled cut length is limited to 96 inches. Open Lumber & drywall for cut pieces and estimated reusable offcuts. Framing assemblies still need a reviewed construction plan.
03 / SET THE MATERIAL & THE MOOD
Cover a wall. Add points of light.
In a framed wall’s Edit controls, choose ½-inch drywall, ⅝-inch drywall or ¾-inch plywood. Apply it to the front or both sides, or return to a bare frame. The covering follows the frame and its opening. Choose Paint & textures to explore the finish.
Choose Builder → LED point and tap a wall or ceiling. Edit its color, switch it on or off, and duplicate it for a repeated layout. These are visual lighting points, not photometric calculations or a wiring design.
For fitted storage, open Builder → Sheets, wardrobes & more tools → Custom wardrobe. Set the dimensions and explore wood finishes. You can also upload your own textures and compatible GLB models through My uploads.
Upload your image. Choose Builder → Sheets, wardrobes & more tools → Picture → wood. PNG, JPG and WebP files up to 20 MB are supported. A clean transparent PNG usually makes the outer silhouette easier to identify.
Trace the outline. Choose transparent or light-background tracing, then inspect the contour. Adjust the light-background threshold or trace by hand if the automatic edge is unsuitable.
Set the cutout size. Enter the actual outer width or height in inches. Keep outline proportions on to preserve the shape. Transparent padding around the image is excluded from these dimensions.
Choose the wood thickness. Select ½ or ¾ inch and add the cutout to your room. The room shows a simplified extruded silhouette; the fabrication download retains the fuller trace.
The trace keeps the largest outer silhouette. Internal holes, disconnected pieces and fine details need separate preparation. This workflow creates a flat cut profile with thickness; it does not generate a carved 3D relief or machine-ready toolpaths.
PRIVATE PROJECT REFERENCES
Bring the products and artwork with the plan.
Open My uploads → My textures. Drag a texture onto a surface, or select an object and choose Apply. The original stays on your device; applied originals are privately archived when you save to your account or submit the room. The editor uses optimized previews and keeps the original file unchanged.
For an item missing from the furniture catalog, open “Can’t find it?” in Builder or Furniture. Upload a photo, add a product link and comment, then move and resize its reference placeholder. A numbered flag identifies it in the room. Select the reference and choose “Attach current view with flags” to retain an annotated image. Save your project after capturing; editing the room clears the old snapshot attachment so you can capture an updated view.
YForge receives the assigned originals, comments and saved placement with your submitted project. Automatic texture enhancement is not active. Uploaded photos are references, not automatic 3D reconstructions.
Open Matching wallpaper & fabrication files. Set an extra solid-color border per edge, choose its color, then set the print panel width and panel overlap. The artwork and cut contour keep their original size while the border expands outward.
A 24 × 36-inch cutout, with a ¼-inch border
Print bounds: 24½ × 36½ inches. Add twice the border to each cutout dimension. Registration marks sit outside those bounds. The CNC cut profile stays 24 × 36 inches.
A border is a visible design and trimming allowance. It is not cutter compensation and does not automatically calculate material stretch or wrapping around the board’s thickness.
After reviewing the outline and dimensions, download the ZIP. It contains the cropped artwork, a millimeter DXF contour, a contour-only SVG, matched artwork with calibration marks, and overlapping wallpaper panels. Keep the linked artwork file beside the SVGs.
Print at 100% and measure the calibration bar and a full-size proof. The shown pixels-per-inch value helps flag low-resolution artwork; increasing the physical size cannot create missing image detail. A CNC operator must prepare CAM, cutter compensation, tabs, hold-down and machine settings, then verify a test cut.
06 / FROM CONCEPT TO CONVERSATION
Save it. Review it. Make it yours.
Save editable drafts while the layout is evolving. Use Preview for a cleaner presentation and label estimated dimensions clearly. Your uploaded-artwork cutout exports are separate from YForge’s protected project files.
The editor is free to explore. The first four published projects are free; commercial users need the applicable license before a fifth publication. Final publication locks a project. YForge-authored technical plans and project downloads remain subject to their existing paid-access requirements.
Interior designers, architects, homeowners and property managers can use this workflow to discuss a gaming room, decorative feature wall, wallpaper installation or fitted storage. College design students can practise the same steps for a clearly labeled concept portfolio.
For a Massachusetts project, bring room photos, site measurements, the town, your design direction, budget range and intended schedule. YForge reviews the decorative scope and installation responsibilities with you before work is agreed.
